But but -- fireside chats that stay on message, even something so utterly banal as "golly gee, the times are tough, but things will eventually be better, you betchya" -- those would break the bubbles. Those would get right wingers and left wingers talking to each other, understanding each other. Agreeing! That, he could never have. For there lies the peril that they all might see he has no clothes. The great semi-rural Protestant center, suddenly reading the Washington Post and realizing it's not all lies. Cats and dogs living together...... He's not only incapable, he wouldn't do it if he could. Far better to be reviled by a few and adored by a few. If he has a choice to be more-or-less indifferently viewed by a large majority, one leaning toward positive approval on average, and be swept back into office in a landslide, he'll choose the other, where the extremes are loudest and the world burns. There's already one more-or-less decent man on the ballot in November, who needs a second?

Anyway, you're right. He's actually incapable. Great post.
