Last time I took a Twitter break, I utterly failed in my long-term goal to look at and change the way I used Twitter. That time my break was precipitated by burnout from news and politics and so my withdrawal from the Twittersphere was total. This time, I'm withdrawing for more personal reasons while still doing the work, so I haven't signed out of Twitter on my computer and I'm still using it to check trending topics, do searches, and even check my timeline for what's happening and what's being said about it.
Another thing I need to keep reminding myself is that doing what I'm good at means I'm usually faster at doing it than the average person and so it's okay if I can zip in, add a bunch of value, and zip out. It's the resulting contribution in the world (especially if it makes other people more able to contribute themselves) that matters, not the amount of time I spend.
Shaking the 'asses in chairs', 'quantity is what matters because we can measure quantity and quality is harder' mindset of so many employers is a major challenge for freelancers.
Another thing that I have to keep reminding myself is how much of writing is walking around the house staring off into the middle distance, mumbling to myself. The hands on the keyboard, that's just the typing part.
Observations from a Tactical Retreat
So much that resonates for me here.
