The hair thing reminds me of Tammy Faye Bakker (not necessarily a narcissist), who was *well aware* that her eyelashes looked ridiculous, but basically needed X amount of mascara to feel like her eyelashes looked like they were there at all, to her mind. She would rather look like a "beautiful" clown than be ugly or plain.
